When a company delivers a service, like electricity or natural gas, they deserve to be rewarded for giving the public a vital need and creating jobs. When one of those companies endangers thousands by neglecting to replace dangerous and dilapidated pipelines, they need to fix the problem and apologize. The average American family will spend almost $100 on school supplies this year. As a father of three school-aged boys, I know that buying your kids the items they need for the first day of school can add up to a lot of money, quickly.
Already, Texans struggle every day with the effects of the national economic recession. For many Texans, the money that folks spend on their children’s school supplies will compete directly with essential household goods.
For this reason, I supported a bill during the legislative session that makes school supplies more affordable. House Bill 1801 expands the list of essential school supplies exempted from the sales tax during the annual sales tax holiday, which will take place this weekend, August 21st-23rd.

In addition to clothes, footwear, and some backpacks, the legislation I supported ensures that Texas families also get a sales tax break on most school supplies priced at less than $100.
